Hi! My name is Larkn. I am a singer. songwriter and music producer based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I founded Better From Here Music, an independent record label (that offers music production and other career services to independent musicians) to create a way to help music artists obtain their dreams of having successful music careers.
I went to Berklee College of Music is Boston, Massachusetts and studied Contemporary Writing and Production. Afterwards I spent around six years in Los Angeles learning about the music business in different areas (i.e. publishing, record labels, artist careers, marketing, TV/Film industry, record production and songwriting).
I was very motivated and inspired by the lack of opportunities for songwriters to get their music heard, produced and recorded (without really costly investors, rich significant others, or unappealing record deals) or maybe it's the do-it-myself mentally and thirst for knowledge I've always had, but I found myself armed with too much knowledge to pass on the opportunity to create something like Better From Here Music.
So shortly after returning to Michigan (my home state), I did. Around this time I entered the Audio Production and Engineering Program at Washtenaw Community College where I study how to work with sound and music production equipment and software. Having lived in Los Angeles for many years, I've amassed a wide range of experiences in approaching commercializing music, which I aspire to include in my career as a songwriter, producer, engineer, teacher, coach and professional music artist.
I sing, play piano and guitar and compose, arrange and produce music in a wide range of styles. Whether its in an engineer, producer, film-composer, songwriter or coaching capacity, music is my passion.
I coach in the following four "P" principal approach, which is designed to arm musicians with advice, tools and perspectives to become a professional musician.
▶️ artist development and coaching or (practicing)
▶️ songwriting (publishing)
▶️ production approaches (production)
▶️ promotion

One thing I observed in LA, was the waning of resources for composers, songwriters and artists in main Hollywood. With so much content being independently produced and distributed on the internet, there has never been a better time to arm oneself with skills in songwriting, music production and just about every skill you can think of to being ones' own business. Every day there is more content being made that has music, whether it is a video on Tik Tok, a documentary or a new podcast. Better From Here Music, like its name implies, carries with it a mindset and prevailing over adversity and of possibility. Without question, good music does make life better. Whether it was the song playing during your first date or the one that helped you get through the most difficult moments of your life (for me, I Just Called to Say I Love You, by Stevie Wonder), the music that penetrates and touches our human spirit can have a unique and lasting impact on our lives. So rather than succumb to all of the thoughts about who we need to be as creators to "make it," or "be discovered," let's allow music to fulfill its intended role and purpose in people's lives of creating joy and happiness (and all of the rest).
